ok, so Marty finally won an oscar. big deal, the oscars should thank him instead of the other way around. Does anybody think this way? It was a running joke, not giving him the damn thing. Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, No Direction Home, The Departed...I could go on, people.
And now we gripe about giving him the prize for "not his best work". Or that he's past his prime. Weeelll. What is the man supposed to do? The year Goodfellas was nominated they gave Best Picture to Dances With Wolves or as my brother calls it, Kevin Costner goes Tatanka. 'Nuff said.
His speech was darling. And it just proves that if you're short, Jewish/Italian/Ethnic and a fast talking New Yorker, you're bound to make some good movies. Before you run out of stuff to say. See Woody Allen and Sidney Lumet for further reference.
